There were students in uniforms working at desks in orderly rows, peace and quiet and a teacher in complete control - seeing everything, knowing everything. There was the Principal's Office too.
There were tin lunch boxes with glass thermoses, the new Jack-In-The-Box around the corner, Winchell's Donuts, PF Flyers, Keds, hopscotch, wooden merry-go-round, jungle gym, marbles, card flipping, paddle ball, basketballs, footballs, baseballs and four-square.
The screeching sounds of nails scraping a blackboard, affecting every nerve, erasers soaring across the classroom every so often and the clouds of white powder from the pounding of erasers...aaah, those were the days.
